On the fly: Killzone 2

May 5th, 2009 | By | Category: Games

I tend to rent a lot of my games as I move on fairly quickly to a new game so owning them is of little use to me, but the service I use for renting games seems to of clogged up recently, meaning I don’t get the games I want to play as fast as I used to. Which is why i’m only getting around to Killzone 2 now. I ended up getting a loan of it off a friend who loved it.

Also, being a bit of a PC gamer elitist, I really don’t like playing FPS games on the console with a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse.

On the fly: Dark Sector

I had meant to get into an RPG or RTS after finishing HAWX, but nothing in my backlog was really appealing to me. I seem to be a sucker for simple and short games that seem they are going to be fun. So the game that fit this bill was a recently PC released TPS called “Dark Sector”. I’d played the PS3 demo of this game, and wasn’t impressed, but my main gripe was really with trying to aim and move with the analogue stick, I wanted to give the game another shot with the accuracy and ease of use of the mouse. Like my HAWX review, this is another “on the fly” post that will be updated as I play the game.

On the fly: Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X

Thought I’d try out a different way of reviewing a game for a change. My opinions on games tend to change as and when I play them, and different aspects external to the game can affect my current opinion of it. Usually in hindsight I’ll like the game to a degree and will have lost perspective on the previous reasons that made me feel like quitting it and giving up.

Street Fighter IV

Not to let myself get caught up in the pre-release hype for this game, I gave it a bit of a wide berth to see if it was more than just nostalgia that was making me want it. I left it for about 2 weeks to watch the reviews stream in with opinions on it. There where a few gripes in regards to controls from the upper echelons of SF4 players, but nothing a lowly beginner like me would have to worry about.

Mercenaries 2

This game had kind of been sitting on the back burner for a while. After playing through the first half of GTA IV (I’ve never finished it) and feeling largely underwhelmed, it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth in regards to sandbox games. I then played Far Cry 2, another sandbox game but in first person, and while it was good it suffered from GTA IV’s same crippling problem, and that was having all this freedom and nothing really to do with it. It’s all well and good being able to walk around a seemingly infinite world, but if all I can do is smell the virtual roses then what is the point?

Savage Moon (PSN)

Here is another short post to recommend a game I have been playing religiously every day after work. It’s a good way to blow off steam.

The game itself would be classed as a “Tower Defense” game, whereby you need to build towers and turrets to protect your base from “creeps” or the baddies that will march towards your base. It’s kind of like a very basic RTS, but immensely satisfying in my opinion.
