I recently completely updated my blog to the magazine-style theme you see now (or at least should if you are viewing this in March, 09). Previously I had a Super Mario Theme, which, even though I loved it, I felt was pigeon holing me in regards to what I could write about, namely as it was a gamer theme I should really be writing about games and gaming technology. Sometimes I don’t want to talk about games, I just want to play them and be done with it.

I intended to start this blog as really a place to just write what I’m thinking about and what I’m liking. But soon into it, after reading a load of blogging guides, I got it into my head that I should specialize my subjects and try to turn my blog into something I could monetize. So I started looking into google ads, stat counters and *shock horror* ways to manipulate social media. For a week or so I even tried stumbleupon exchange, but felt dirty using it, because even though it was substantially herding traffic to my site, it wasn’t justified. Stumbleupon Exchange is basically made up of a load of people who aren’t writing good articles but want people to view them anyway, and hopefully click on their plethora of ads. Was this who I seen myself as? Did I just want the bottom line? Is this what I wanted social networking to turn into?

After realizing my answer was “no” to all of the latter questions, I had to stop and re-evaluate how I was going to move forward. I want people to eventually regularly visit my site and subscribe to it, but I don’t want them to have to sift through all my posts on varying, unrelated subjects to find the ones they are interested in. So I started thinking about how does printed media handle this problem, which is when I hit on the magazine style layout, which, kindly, someone had already designed for free. When you get a newspaper or magazine, you see all the varying sections and stories from it on the front page. So you can completely ignore politics and sports if they are of no interest to you, instead of being forced to read it linearly. My site is now the same. The main page has all the main categories I will be writing about, so if you frequently visit it you can simply click on the category you are interested in, and it will also be easy to see if I have(n’t) updated anything in that category for a while. Alternatively you can subscribe to an RSS feed on your categories of choice.

I want to completely move away from trying to monetize this blog, which is why from this post on I won’t be adding GoogleAds into them. Maybe, in a few years, if I haven’t given up on blogging I’ll try to write on specific subjects and care about traffic, but I think before then I need to get my feet wet and see if this is really for me. I tend to ruin most of my endeavours by falsely turning them into a job. I tried writing a diary once in my teens, but after a month I had made it a chore by telling myself I had to write at least half a page, every day, at a certain time. Most days nothing would be going on and I’d just end up writing down what I ate that day and did in school. So I eventually quit out of boredom. A week ago, I felt the same was happening with this blog.

Hopefully though, this reboot and remix will change that. I can blurb about what ever is going on in my life, but still dedicate some time to working on my review skills of games. If you have any comments about the blog, or things you like and dislike, then please comment and let me know.
